The U.S. Senate passed a resolution June 16 that declared this month as Great Outdoors Month, the fifth year in a row the Senate recognized the celebration.
Great Outdoors Month began in 1998 under former President Bill Clinton and has “grown tremendously” with the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable (ORR)’s support, the association stated. America’s public lands and waters were the spotlight of events such as the Great Outdoors Campout, National Trails Day, Kids to Parks Day and more.
“Great Outdoors Month means so much to the outdoor recreation industry, the hundreds of millions of Americans who enjoy responsible recreation on our public lands and waters, and the communities who benefit economically from outdoor recreation,” ORR Executive Director Jessica Turner said.
Turner noted ORR thanked Sens. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) and Steve Daines (R-Mont.), who sponsored the resolution.
“This year, Great Outdoors Month is more than a celebration of and getting outside,” Turner said, “it is also a call to action for those of us in the outdoor recreation community to continue to push for more and equitable access to the outdoors and to support communities as they build their economies around outdoor recreation.”
