RVIA Details Escapists’ Profile

RVIA examined another cluster identified within the Go RVing RV Owner Demographic Profile. Seven clusters were identified and RVIA most recently addressed Escapists.

The Escapists cluster comprises 16% of RV owners. RVIA said these RVers enjoy the freedom RV travel provides. In particular, they enjoy water-based activities and scenic locations.

Escapists’ desire to reach scenic locations is reflected in the cluster’s reasons for RVing. Respondents cited relaxing, exploring the great outdoors and visiting a location with natural beauty as top reasons to RV. Additional reasons listed included saving money on travel costs and controlling their own itineraries.

When Escapists are on the road, they commonly enjoy fishing, hiking and boating. Regarding accommodations, 63% choose to stay at state parks, while 56% prefer to stay at a private campground and 44% stay at a national park campground.

The majority of Escapists hit the road in an RV during the summer months (90%) or during fall (73%), RVIA said. Their RVs are used anywhere from 31 to 90 days out of the year, and the types most frequently used among this group are a conventional travel trailer, a fifth-wheel or a Class A motorhome. In all, 68% bought their RV new, and 75% already have an RV plan to purchase another one.

In terms of demographics, 54% of Escapists are older than 55 and are evenly divided between male and female. Full-time workers comprise 40% of Escapists while 40% are retired. Of those who do work, 60% make over $65,000. Nearly a third of Escapists live with no children in the home.

RVIA has detailed five of the seven clusters identified and said the remaining two will be explored in the coming weeks.
