A trade association representing portable generator manufacturers issued a safety alert to anyone using portable generators, including dealers who might have the generators powering RVs on their lot.
The Portable Generator Manufacturers’ Association (PGMA) warned that portable generators misuse can result in exposure to dangerous – even deadly – carbon monoxide (CO).
The safety rules are simple, the association stated, but could save a life.
Among the rules PGMA cited was to always read the operator’s manual first. PGMA recommended choosing portable generators with automatic CO shutoff systems that meet ANSI/PGMA G300-2018 standard requirements.
Other rules include:
- Keep the generator outside and far away from doors and openings.
- Always position the generator so fumes are pointed away from an RV, truck/car, trailer, tent and people.
- Know the symptoms of CO poisoning. Symptoms include headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, and shortness of breath. If you feel symptoms, leave the area right away.
