A new report from CNBC says the Port of Los Angeles’ ship vessel queue waiting to unload cargo has dropped 80% since the start of the year.
The backlog was 109 vessels at its highest level, CNBC reported, and has fallen to just 20 now.
Ships have been stacked in the ocean outside the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports because of delays in unloading containers from the vessels and in loading containers on to rail and trucks.
“We reduced that backlog of ships since the beginning of the year,” said Gene Seroka, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles. “Now we want to get that number to zero.”
Seroka said although the wait times have improved, conditions have not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels. More improvements are needed in delivering goods inland after the containers have been unloaded, he said.
