Agency Reports Fuel Prices Climbing

Gas and diesel prices at the pump rose again last week, according to the latest report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Gasoline prices averaged $2.89 nationwide as of May 3. The price is up $1.10 from the same time a year earlier, and rose 1.8 cents from the previous week.

Gasoline prices ranged from a low of $2.583 in the Gulf Coast Region to a high of $3.598 in the West Coast. The Gulf Coast was the only region among eight nationwide that saw average prices fall from the previous week. The Rocky Mountain region averaged $3.018 a gallon, up $1.246 a gallon from the same time in 2020.

Average nationwide diesel prices also rose 1.8 cents a gallon from the previous week, EIA reported, to $3.142 a gallon. The price is up 74.3 cents a gallon from the same time in 2020.

Regionally, prices range from a low of $2.924 a gallon in the Gulf Coast to a high of $3.664 in the West Coast. California’s diesel price averaged $3.983 a gallon.
