Cummins Inc., Daimler Truck North America, Ford Motor Co. and Stellantis N.V. were among the truck manufacturers who recently joined a Clean Truck Partnership with the California Air Resources Board (CARB).
The agreement terms state CARB will align with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) regulations of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in 2027. CARB will modify elements of its 2024 NOx emission regulations as manufacturers provide emission offsets as needed to maintain California’s emission targets.
In the agreement, CARB said it would provide no less than four years’ lead time, and at least three years of regulatory stability, before imposing new requirements.
The truck manufacturers agreed to meet CARB’s zero-emission and criteria pollutant state regulations regardless of potential challenges to California’s authority to issue such regulations.
CARB will propose NOx rule changes by Aug. 29, 2023.
