Candy Heath became a Dutchmen RV hero after saving her co-worker Tracie Nowicki’s life.
Dutchmen and Keystone RV recognized Heath for her life-saving efforts with the company’s Courageous Action Award in a ceremony held March 7.
Inside Dutchmen Plant No. 820 in Middlebury, Indiana, which manufactures Coleman and Colorado travel trailers, scale operator Nowicki was eating in the break area. A piece of food became lodged in her throat, cutting off oxygen.
“I honestly did not think I was going to survive as I could not breathe or call for help,” Nowicki said. “My fingers and face were turning blue.”
Heath, a plant cleaner, entered the break room and saw her co-worker in danger. She rushed to Nowicki and performed the Heimlich maneuver, freeing the blockage from Nowicki’s throat.
Heath said, “Because of my training I just did what was needed. Honestly, I did not even think. I was not afraid; I just knew she needed help.”
Dutchmen President Aaron Young said, “Candy’s actions embody the spirit of teamwork and compassion that we strive to foster within our organization. Her quick thinking and bravery undoubtedly saved a life, and we are immensely proud to have her as part of our team.”
