Kampgrounds of America’s (KOA) recent Camper Profiles report revealed growth and change in the camping landscape. In 2023, KOA reported more than 53.6 million active camping households, a 68% increase from 2014.

KOA President and CEO Toby O’Rourke said, “The outdoor hospitality industry has grown substantially in the past decade, welcoming experienced and new campers. We are encouraged by the data shown in the report and excited to welcome more people out to connect with nature.”

Nearly two-thirds (65%) of RVers take one to two camping trips per year. According to the report, the average consumer spends 6.7 nights camping annually. More than half (60%) of consumers began their outdoor experience before the age of 18.

More than half (57%) of RVers prioritize slowing down and enjoying the moment while 50% seek unique camping experiences such as natural events.

KOA’s report found that younger consumers are drawn to adventure-based activities while older generations prefer leisurely activities and comfortable accommodations.

Millennial RVers prioritize quality time with family and friends, often camping at state parks or glamping resorts.

KOA concluded that Gen X and Boomers account for 52% of RVers. KOA discovered that Gen X consumers select RVs or cabins providing comfort and opportunities to explore local areas and small towns. Boomers and Silent Generation consumers often prefer RVing’s comfort and convenience. This generation enjoys exploring national parks and scenic routes.

Over half (54%) of consumers begin outdoor journeys at a campground or outdoor resort with various amenities and services. Less than half (48%) considered Wi-Fi the most important campground amenity.

The report is the sixth in KOA’s Camping and Outdoor Hospitality Report series.
