A recent Kampgrounds of America (KOA) study uncovered shifts in consumers’ travel behaviors and amenities demands. The Campground Modernization report recorded shifts over the past decade were led by millennials.

KOA President and CEO Toby O’Rourke said, “As the travel industry continues to evolve, we are beginning to see a shift in how campers are looking to experience the outdoors…Campers today have learned to expect services and amenities that make their stay more comfortable.”

More than a third (37%) of consumers opted for RV accommodations at campgrounds. The report displayed that eight out of 10 consumers who do not regularly camp, and seven in 10 consumers who regularly camp, are interested in staying at a campground where the RV is set up before arrival.

KOA reported sustainability is also important to consumers, with more than half saying they would choose a campground with sustainable practices.

Today’s consumers are interested in having internet access. Gen Z consumers said they would spend an extra nine days camping when they have internet access. Nearly half of new consumers said WiFi is the most important amenity when choosing a campground. Overall, 21% of consumers expect high-speed internet while camping. Millennials and Gen X consumers account for the 48% of consumers who expect high-speed internet, while Gen Z consumers accounts for 20%.

Four in 10 consumers view text message updates and digital check-ins as an important feature in their camping experience.

Transportation needs have also evolved with the introduction of electric vehicles in the past 10 years. More than three-quarters (80%) of consumers who own or plan to own an electric vehicle would use them for camping purposes.
