President Will Not Provide Steel and Aluminum Tariff Exemptions

On Sunday, President Donald Trump said he looked forward to April 2, when he will institute reciprocal tariffs on products worldwide, as a liberating day for the U.S.

He also said the U.S. would not provide exemption to the 25% tariffs on all imported steel and aluminum products. The tariffs took effect last week.

He said, “It’s a liberation day for our country because we’re going to be getting back a lot of the wealth that we so foolishly gave up to other countries, including friend and foe.”

Asked by Washington reporters whether he would ease tariffs to calm uncertain stock and bond markets, the president said he would not.

“They charge us, and we charge them,” he said, referring to the reciprocal tariffs. “Then, in addition to that, on autos, on steel, on aluminum, we are going to have some additional tariffs.”
