The city of Oakland is creating an urban RV park to house homeless people and others who may be medically vulnerable to COVID-19 infection.
SFBayca.com reported today that Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf announced city plans for an “isolation trailer program” meant to house 130 people in East Oakland for the foreseeable future. Schaaf made the announcement standing at the camp’s site in a parking lot on Hegenberger Road on Tuesday.
Schaaf said this is the first time the city has operated an RV park. Dubbed “Operation HomeBase,” the project will use 67 state-donated trailers, SF Bay reported.
The city plans to add another 15 trailers for “vulnerable homeless people” in West Oakland soon. SF Bay reported that the city does not intend to remove people from the site as the pandemic continues, and that there is no limit to length.
“We recognize that giving respite to 130 people is not the answer to our homeless problem but this is a tremendous step forward to giving people wonderful, safe and healthy places to live, and not just during this pandemic,” Schaff said.
