For 40 years, the non-profit Care Camps has funded pediatric oncology camps across the U.S. and Canada. Upon its 40th anniversary, the organization is changing its name to Care Camps Foundation.
Care Camps was founded in 1984 by a group of Kampgrounds of America (KOA) owners who began fundraising to support camps for children with cancer. Today, Care Camps Foundation funds over 120 camps. The camps grant thousands of children and families with community and outdoor experiences.
Care Camps Foundation Executive Director Gwynn Sullivan said the name change reflected the organization’s foundation function.
“We remain strongly committed to funding these special camps,” Sullivan said, “and believe that Care Camps Foundation more accurately encapsulates the scope and impact of our mission.”
Over the past four decades, Care Camps Foundation raised over $26 million. This past year, the foundation provided $2 million to 122 pediatric oncology camps and the Children’s Oncology Camping Association. The contributions impacted 26,000 lives.
Care Camps Foundation Board Chairman Mark Lemoine said, “Our 40th anniversary is a testament to the dedication and generosity of our donors, volunteers, staff and other partners. Together, we have accomplished so much, and we look forward to continuing our mission under the banner of Care Camps Foundation.”
The organization will celebrate its 40th anniversary throughout 2024. The Foundation is planning events and initiatives to celebrate the organization’s impact. A 40th anniversary publication, fundraising initiatives and commemorative events throughout the year will honor Care Camps Foundation’s legacy.
