Midwest Automotive Designs Founder Tim Gray started the van upfitter company in 2001, redesigning type B motorhomes in Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis shells.
Midwest Automotive Designs was one of the first U.S. Mercedes-Benz-approved companies to become a master upfitter using the Sprinter chassis, a process that took two years to achieve. It was one of the first things the company accomplished, hoping the approval would set them apart from other Sprinter chassis modifiers.
The upfitter’s luxury vans created a high-end market niche for specialty type B RVs, attracting corporate executives and sports teams alike. They build each unit in-house, where construction, wiring and plumbing workers are required to maintain the chassis shell’s structural integrity.
Midwest Automotive Designs sold its custom vans directly to consumers until 2014, when it started selling model RVs through dealers instead. Today, the company builds on Ram ProMaster chassis in its 100,000-square-foot Elkhart, Indiana, plant, in addition to their most-popular Mercedes-Benz ones.
In 2017, Rev Group acquired the type B upfitter. Though Midwest Automotive Designs still makes custom vans, under the Rev Group, the company also mass produces luxury type B RVs.
