An amendment issued last week to the U.S. tariffs imposed on China has restored the exemption provided to products shipped that are valued under $800.
The de minimis exemption was ended when President Donald Trump issued an across-the-board, 10% tariff on all Chinese imports.
However, the new amendment says the duty-free de minimis treatment is available for otherwise eligible covered articles.
The amendment goes on to say that the de minimis exemption will cease to be available once the Commerce Secretary notifies the president that “adequate systems are in place to fully and expediently process and collect tariff revenue.”
The reprieve affects numerous imports. The de minimis exemption reached $1.36 billion in fiscal 2024, the majority of those products imported from China.
