RecPro, a trademark of Icon Direct Inc. and an aftermarket parts and accessories supplier, has acquired the “World’s Fastest Class A Motorhome.” The motorhome is nicknamed “MoHo”.
In 2016, MoHo achieved a top speed of 122.156 mph during the 67th annual Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. According to RecPro, MoHo set the world land speed record for a Type A motorhome.
MoHo is a 1977, 26-foot GMC Kingsley Motorhome featuring an upgraded Chevy Big Block 502 Ram Jet motor with a wet nitrous system rated at over 700 horsepower, 6-wheel disc brakes and custom skirting.
According to the “Guinness Book of World Records” website, the fastest speed achieved by a motorhome is 141.3 mph set by Simon Robins at Elvington Airfield in East Yorkshire, UK on Oct. 21, 2014. Robins drove a Type B motorhome with a double bed, sink stove and toilet.
MoHo’s original owner, Britt Palmer, contends the motorhomes are not in the same class, and MoHo’s record remains unbroken, said Matthew Pico, Icon Direct VP of marketing and sales.
RecPro is improving MoHo to “bring the record back to the U.S.,” Pico said. IconDirect plans to do another speed trial with MoHo in the Fall.
Palmer started the world record project to raise awareness for Charcot-Marie-Tooth, a degenerative nerve disease. Beginning in 2010, Palmer and his team rebuilt the motorhome from the ground up to make it the world’s fastest Type A motorhome. According to Pico, Palmer almost gutted the motorhome in the process and added a roll cage.
During their rookie year at Bonneville in 2013, Palmer and his team achieved a top speed of 120.8 mph, surpassing the previous record of 102.76 mph set by a different GMC motorhome in 2006.
According to Pico, RecPro is lining up the appropriate personnel to work on MoHo. RecPro wants to make the motorhome’s interior “more RV-like,” he said, while keeping the RV safe and fast for the speed trial.
“We plan to unveil a new and improved MoHo by late 2023,” RecPro said. “Planned upgrades include new graphics, lessening drag and further drivetrain upgrades.”
RecPro is scouting for an area to re-run the speed test, Pico said. Sites in contention include the Bonneville Salt Flats and a Florida location.
