EXCLUSIVE: Care Camps Makes Staff Changes

Gwynn B. Sullivan will serve as the new Care Camps executive director. Care Camps Executive Director Karen McAndrew, who has been with Care Camps for over 10 years, resigned her position in the fall and is assisting with the transition. McAndrew’s last day is Jan. 31.

According to Care Camps, Sullivan has 30 years of healthcare experience. She led the award-winning program development and implementation to transform healthcare delivery for people living with serious illness.

In her most recent position as program director for the National Coalition for Hospice and Palliative Care, she spearheaded the coalition’s work to expand national clinical practice guidelines and integrated quality pediatric care.

“My first job out of college I worked on a pediatric unit at the University of Virginia Medical Center, where we took care of the sickest of children and their families,” Sullivan said. “That experience is forever embedded within me.”

As the new Care Camps executive director, Sullivan will facilitate strategic planning, create infrastructures, develop communications and evaluate sustainability strategies.

“Gwynn comes to us with many years of successful leadership positions with nonprofits and has the vision to lead our organization to new heights,” Care Camps Board Chairman Wade Elliott said. “The board of directors, Care Camps staff, and I are thrilled to welcome Gwynn to Care Camps.”

Last year, the Care Camps board of directors set a goal to expand the organization’s staff from two to four to take Care Camps to the next level, said Communications Director Erica Lanter, who continues in her role. Lexi Bickford joined Care Camps as the group’s program coordinator and Jennifer Mercer will continue as the development director.

According to Lanter, Care Camps is concentrating on getting systems in place and streamlining processes to accommodate the 50% staff growth.

“We are so excited. Karen has been gracious and is doing an incredible job of ensuring a smooth transition. She has been instrumental in bringing us this far with heart and graciousness,” Lanter said. “Gwen is fantastic; she will do great things. She is both a visionary and very tactical, which is a powerful combination.”

Care Camps is a not-for-profit organization that raises funds to support specialized oncology camps across the United States and Canada. Click here to learn more.
