EXCLUSIVE: No April Fool, Gen-Y Urges Consumers to ‘Ditch Your Hitch’

Gen-Y Hitch on April 1 launched a consumer promotion called “Ditch Your Hitch.” The promotion will last six months.

The company said consumers who buy a bumper pull hitch either directly from Gen-Y or an authorized Gen-Y dealer in the continental U.S. from April 1 to October 1, can receive $50 and be entered to win one of six $500 grand prizes. One grand prize will be given out per month during the promotion period.

“Of course, we want to drive customers to dealerships to buy one of our hitches,” Gen-Y Hitch founder Carl Borkholder said.

To be eligible for a $50 prize, consumers must send a hitch proof of purchase (dated April 1 to Oct. 1, 2023), a Gen-Y ‘Ditch Your Hitch’ form and their old non-Gen-Y hitch to the company during the promotion period.

“I think we are going to have a very good turnout,” Borkholder said. “We have a large (social media) following that will ditch a hitch to buy a Gen Y hitch… we have gotten very good feedback from consumers when we told them our plans.”

Gen-Y asks consumers to post videos or photos of themselves installing a Gen-Y hitch and getting rid of their old hitch, tag the post with @genyhitch and use the hashtag #ditchyourhitch to gain more entries into the grand prize drawings.

Posting a video or photo to a social media story gains one entry, posting a photo to a feed gets five entries and posting a video to a social media feed gets a consumer 10 entries.

At the end of the promotion, Gen Y will have a lot of used hitches at their office in Nappanee, Indiana.

“We have a plan for that in the end,” Borkholder said. “We are going to make a big pile of hitches, get a dozer, drive over them and destroy them. We will probably end up recycling them, but we will make a fun video first.”
