Volta Power Systems is staying ahead of California’s 2025 ban on small engines by releasing an all-in-one power distribution hub to help smooth the transition to electric for RV manufacturers.
“Our is goal is to provide an advanced energy solution that enters the RV market into a low-carbon footprint … like you are seeing with the EV market transition,” said Jack Johnson, Volta’s chief technology officer. “Wherever you think a generator would go today, we will be that solution…that alternative, green energy, quiet renewable energy source.”
The new power hub simplifies lithium-ion system integration for OEMs, reducing production time and costs, he said. The hub contains all the necessary equipment and ports for charging, AC and DC outputs and MPPT solar control, he said. The cost is comparable to what consumers are used to seeing in the EV market.
“Here is a solution, they can hook it up, bolt it down and it is going to be very close to the labor time for a generator install,” Johnson said, “(The hub delivers) reduced complexity, reduced cost and reduced risk for the small RV innovators that are trying to make this transition.”
Volta is ready to launch a 30-amp base unit and a 50-amp unit.
“It will startup production this month. It is a pretty amazing unit,” he said. “That unit is going to be 8,000 watts continuously capable of producing 240 volts all the time, even on a single leg. It is going to open up a whole bunch of unique capabilities for our customers which they originally could not do with battery technology.”
Johnson said standard units can handle up to 600 watts when charging with solar. The units are scalable. The company can build systems capable of handling up to 6000 watts.
“It is going to open up new supply chains. Traditionally, the RV market has been set based on infrastructure capability at campgrounds,” he said. “Most of our systems are designed for a simple thing from all night with air conditioning, to a strategy where we say we are going for a week off- grid.”
Volta launched the company’s integrated solution first with Airstream on the E1 Package for Interstate and Atlas touring coaches in the summer of 2022.
Johnson said as a partner in the leading Class B brands the company’s goal is to provide RVers and OEs with the simplest and best ‘green camping’ solution. With the California ban just over the horizon, manufacturers are looking for effective solutions.
“Phones have been busy, everybody knows they need to do something. 2025 is the limit,” he said. “They see the writing on the wall. There are nine other states that have signed on to the California policy of eliminating these small engines.”
