Southwire spent months getting its Surge Guard App just right, Southwire National Sales Manager Michael Conway said, and now the product is ready for use with the company’s 34931 and 34951 Surge Guard models.
Consumers can use the Surge Guard App on a phone or tablet to monitor power to their RVs, see errors in real-time and know when RV power will be restored. It can be downloaded from Google Play or the Apple App Store.
“You can watch not only your amperage draw in real-time, but in the event that, hey, your power is disrupted,” Conway said. “It logs that fault.”
The Southwire Surge Guard App enables consumers to see the last eight occurrences in a fault log.
Consumers can go on a hike, come back and see what happened to their RV power while they were enjoying the woods. Conway said being able to understand what caused a power default, whether it is a disconnect due to low voltage or a power disruption, helps consumers learn more about their RVs and why terms like “low voltage” or “elevated ground condition” are important.
Southwire enabled its 34931 and 34951 surge protectors to work with a Bluetooth remote in 2019. Southwire always intended the surge protectors to work with a hand-held app as well, Conway said, especially because new, younger RVers want compatible application technology.
The pandemic slowed the application development process, he said. Last year, the company had the app developed, but Conway said they were not satisfied with it. So, Mitch Kaiser, Southwire circuit protection product manager, and Don Oldham, Southwire lead electrical engineer, ironed out bugs and solved issues, working tirelessly to release it this year.
The Southwire Surge Guard models 34931 and 34951 provide electrical protection from faulty park power and interior electrical issues. The surge guards shut off power if voltage drops below 102 volts or rises above 132 volts. Once the appropriate voltage resumes, power is restored to an RV with a time delay. The devices monitor for faulty wiring from the power pedestal and protect an RV from reverse polarity and open neutral and ground connections.
Later this summer, Southwire will release five new SKUs of Elite portable power units. The company currently has six on the market. The new products will give consumers increased watt-hour and inverter/solar panel sizes, Conway said.
