Four years after debuting a prototype adventure trailer at the RVX show in Salt Lake City, outdoors accessories and vehicle manufacturer SylvanSport brings its Vast to the public today at the Maryland RV Show at the Maryland State Fair Ground in Timonium.
The trade show is the first public showing for the Vast. SylvanSport is working with Beckley’s RV, a longtime SylvanSport partner, to debut the Vast.
The trailer measures 22 feet long from tip to tongue, has a 5,000-pound GVWR and an 800-pound carrying capacity.
The trailer’s composite exterior is a bright green, mirroring the dominant color used throughout SylvanSport’s vehicles and accessories. On the exterior, SylvanSport added two kayak holders using rails and tie-downs similar to an E-track system.
During a walkthrough at the company’s plant in Brevard, North Carolina, SylvanSport executives said the key focus in building the Vast was to bring the outside in and the inside out.
The trailer accomplishes the first task through its rear hatch, which opens fully and acts as a rear awning. The hatch door has a double pane window the company said is among the largest openable windows in the industry.
The hatch opens to gaer and then to a fully convertible L-shaped lounge/sofa, built on a sliding track. Locked in the rear position, the sofa provides seating at the trailer’s rear and converts into a residential-size queen bed.
The lounge can be unlocked and slid to the trailer’s front. The move opens the rear area to store even more gear, easily loaded with the hatch open. Executives said consumers could back the trailer up to their home garage, open the rear hatch and unload the trailer without having precipitation fall on the consumers during the unloading.
Above the lounge is a drop-down queen bed with a power lift to store near the ceiling. The ceiling includes a skylight, which can open into three positions, including a fully open position to function as a fire escape.
In front, the kitchen galley includes a sink, a two-burner propane cooktop, a large Truma dual-zone cooler and countertop space with a task light above.
The unique kitchen function is its ability to entirely pull out from the trailer – like a large pull-out pantry shelf. The kitchen can lock in its outside position and includes a flip-up countertop for additional food prep space. With the kitchen deployed an exterior courtyard is created with a 14-foot Thule awning over the top to stay dry even in the wettest of weather.
With the kitchen extended outside, the Vast’s shower stall is revealed. When the kitchen is inside the trailer, it occupies the shower stall space.
The shower stall includes a wraparound curtain and a special curtain holder behind the shower stall that drains into the pan, even when the kitchen is repositioned inside.
The shower stall connects to the trailer’s bathroom, which has a 4-gallon Thetford cassette toilet and a flip-down sink. The Vast has a 30-gallon freshwater tank and a 32-gallon gray water tank.
The Vast comes with a Dometic rooftop air conditioner and Maxxair vents. The roof features 800 watts of solar panels, charging a pair of 125-amp-hour lithium batteries.
