The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), responsible for providing temporary housing for those affected by disasters, said it plans to seek support from RV manufacturers to build emergency, accessible, RV-based housing.
FEMA staff collaborated with an RV industry task force to assemble a proposal request with prototypes to be released early next year. The organization hopes to work with more than one RV manufacturer to complete the project.
According to FEMA, manufacturers who bid successfully on the project will be assembling accessible, ADA-compliant travel trailers. The trailers will have the same amenities as those sold on retail lots, including the standard finishes, fixtures and exterior graphics.
FEMA wants to create of stock of trailers and will not mandate what materials and methods the manufacturers use, provided the trailers meet the accessibility requirements shown in the plans.
Information about bid procedures will be published when the proposal is released.
