Average regular gasoline prices reached $3.17 a gallon for the week ending Aug. 9, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported.
The $3.17 average is the highest price this year, up 1.3 cents a gallon from the previous week. EIA reported the average regular gas price is at its highest level since October 2014.
Diesel prices were essentially flat from the week before, averaging $3.36 a gallon nationwide.
“We continue to see very robust gasoline demand for the peak summer driving season,” said Jeanette McGee, AAA spokesperson. “The latest demand rate was 2% higher than the same time period in 2019, while gasoline stocks are about 1% below.”
AAA reported wide-ranging variations in gas prices nationwide, with some states up as much as 9 cents a gallon while others fell as much as 7 cents a gallon. EIA attributed to the shifts in part to an increase in demand and decrease in stocks.
Michigan, which gained 9 cents a gallon from the previous week, and Colorado, which gained 7 cents a gallon, were the largest gainers in average gasoline price. Delaware saw prices fall 7 cents a gallon from the previous week.
