Go RVing’s most recent demographic profile focuses on truck camper owners. These are owned by 3% of RVers, according to the study. Young families make up 36% of truck camper owners, while 52% are millennials and Gen Zers. First time RV owners comprise 28% of buyers.
Go RVing found truck campers are used during 50% of owners’ vacation time. Most truck campers are used in summer (77%), followed by fall (43%), spring (32%) and winter (24%). Over half (54%) of truck camper owners prefer to have accommodations at state parks or recreation area campgrounds, while 41% prefer national park campgrounds and 35% stay at private campgrounds.
Alongside RV trips, 45% of truck camper owners also engage in outdoor sports. The survey found 43% go fishing and 22% engage in water recreational activities. Truck camper owners’ top three reasons for RVing are spending time outdoors (13%), unwinding and relaxing (11%), and controlling their own itinerary (10%). Other outdoor activities they bring with them include bicycles (29%) and ATVs or other four-wheelers (11%).
This group of RV owners are largely (52%) between the ages of 18-54. Almost half (46%) of truck camper owners are female. In terms of employment, 31% are retired while 44% are employed full-time. The average annual income for 57% of truck camper owners is over $65,000. A total of 29% live with children in the home.
