Multiple published reports Friday morning said the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will announce it is suspending rules requiring negative Covid tests for international travelers before flying to the U.S.
The restriction has been in place since January 2021. CNN, which first reported the story, said the change will go into effect for U.S.-bound air travelers at midnight ET on Sunday.
Travelers entering the U.S. at land border crossings were exempt from the rule but international air travelers have been required to show proof of a negative test before boarding for 18 months.
Reports say the CDC will review and reassess the decision in 90 days.
“I am glad CDC suspended the burdensome coronavirus testing requirement for international travelers,” Nevada Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto said, “and I will continue to do all I can to support the strong recovery of our hospitality industry.”
