The Interior Department named Winnie Stachelberg as its new senior advisor and infrastructure coordinator.
The position oversees the department’s implementation of the infrastructure law.
Interior Department Secretary Deb Haaland said the law is a “down payment” to ensure future generations have access to clean air and drinking water, fertile soil and a currently threatned overall quality of life.
“Stachelberg brings three decades of distinguished management and public policy experience to the table to help the department rapidly implement this law,” Haaland said. “I look forward to working with her to ensure that its investments are put to work immediately to address the climate crisis and create good-paying jobs in communities across the nation.”
Stachelberg said she is excited to work on implementing the investment.
“It is critical that we get to work quickly to get these much-needed dollars out to communities as soon as possible,” Stachelberg said.
Stachelberg was nominated to be the Interior Department’s assistant secretary for policy, management and budget this summer. Instead, she will lead the complex implementation of the infrastructure law, which contains more than $30 billion in new investments for Interior Department programs
As part of the position, Stachelberg will lead the department’s coordination with the Infrastructure Implementation Task Force.
Stachelberg was most recently the executive vice president for external affairs at the Center for American Progress, and before that spent 11 years with the Human Rights Campaign, serving as political director and the first vice president of HRC’s Foundation. She earned a master’s degree in public administration from George Washington University.
