Kampgrounds of America’s (KOA) latest monthly report showed an uptick in 2024 travel bookings. The trend was most prevalent among Gen Z consumers.
KOA said this increase suggests travelers’ eagerness to secure their spot for future trips. Gen Z consumers and individuals who began camping from 2020-2022 lead the early booking trend. The report found consumers’ key booking motivations include family reunions, birthdays and celebrations during major holidays such as Memorial Day and Independence Day.
KOA said the data showcases a collective desire to use trips as opportunities to celebrate and deepen connections with loved ones.
KOA Senior Vice President of Strategy Whitney Scott said, “The increase in travel bookings year-over-year is not just about the act of traveling…It is heartening that the outdoors is becoming the place to commemorate milestones and strengthen bonds with family and friends.”
Throughout all bookings, consumers ranked camping as the most popular activity (54%). Nearly two-thirds of consumers (64%) have made upcoming trip reservations. Only 29% of non-camping leisure travelers made similar arrangements.
The report indicates a continuing trend of integrating road trips with camping. The road trip preference was 10% higher compared with traditional camping activities. The report revealed that 59% of campers favored road trips and 49% opted for stationary camping. KOA analyzed the statistics as reflecting a deeper integration of road-tripping into the camping experience.
The report found 16% of travelers have shortened or intend to shorten 2024 booking windows. Among the reasons cited for planning shorter trips are weather concerns and work schedules.
This trend is less evident among RVers, while 25% of those combining camping with other travel forms are inclined towards last-minute plans.
Scott said the shorter trips correlate with 2023 cancellations and delays.
“It is imperative that we stay ahead of these changes to ensure that we continue to meet the needs of our campers,” Scott said, “and adapt to the shifting landscape of outdoor recreation.”
