Outdoor Roundtable Hires Senior Program Director

The Outdoor Recreation Roundtable (ORR) hired Ambreen Tariq as senior program director. Tariq will build upon and expand ORR’s key programs currently consisting of Workforce, Rural Development, State Offices of Outdoor Recreation, and Together Outdoors.

“Ambreen brings a decade of government experience from her work with the Department of Labor, Environmental Protection Agency and White House,” said Jessica Wahl-Turner, ORR president. “Ambreen’s curiosity, collaborative nature, and drive to support outdoor recreation businesses and enthusiasts have propelled her success as an entrepreneur with Brown People Camping. We are thrilled to bring her deep background in workforce, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and communications to ORR’s team and the outdoor recreation economy as we support the health and sustainability of our nation’s public lands and waters and work to ensure that all Americans can access the great outdoors and feel welcome there.”

Tariq authored “Fatima’s Great Outdoors,” founded and runs @BrownPeopleCamping, is a non-practicing attorney, and most recently was a strategic communications specialist for the federal government in Washington, D.C.

Tariq has worked with several outdoor recreation businesses and been a brand ambassador for Ford Mustang, Merrell, L.L. Bean, Airstream, Coleman, REI and others.

“I am honored and thrilled to begin my journey as Senior Program Director of the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable,” Tariq said. “Together, we will help ensure the outdoors are a welcoming and safe space for everyone and in so doing, leverage the empowering nature of outdoor recreation to inspire, connect, and protect our cherished natural wonders. Our work is part of a larger movement to honor the cultural history of our public lands and ensure access to it for all today, tomorrow, and generations to come.”

Tariq’s key responsibilities will involve working on programs and with state outdoor recreation offices, to:

  • Build out partnerships, plans, and future work that will elevate the entire outdoor sector and serve as project manager on relevant programs;
  • Provide strategic oversight and communications around programs;
  • Drive program development and engagement with coalition members, ensuring all programs support ORR’s 3-year Strategic Plan and that equity and inclusion objectives are embedded in industry-wide programming, hiring practices and ethos;
  • Present at member trade shows, conferences, and partner events and provide expertise on ORR programs at conferences and convenings; and
  • Develop relationships and lead strategic initiatives for Together Outdoors including its integration through other ORR programs.
