
President Donald Trump revealed plans to eliminate the de minimis exemption for imports from China on May 2. As the president increased overall tariffs on China, he made moves to increase tariffs on products previously subject to the de minimis exemption.
Beginning May 2, imports from China valued at $800 or less will be subject to one of three pricing tariffs.
If the product is shipped, the previous 30% tariff beginning May 2 will be increased to 90%. The president Thursday increased the total to 120%.
If the product is sent via international postal service, the tariff on the product valued at $800 or less shipped before June 1 will increase from the previous $25 standard to $75. The president Thursday increased the total to $100.
If the product is sent via international postal service, the tariff on the product valued at $800 or less shipped on or after June 1 will increase from the previous $50 standard to $150. The president Thursday increased the total to $200.
The de minimis exemption from imported products valued at $800 or less remains in place for countries other than China and Hong Kong.
