The RVIA Board of Directors on June 6 approved a motion regarding vertical clearance requirements for RV exterior griddle installations.
Exterior griddles must have a 30-inch minimum vertical clearance between the cooking surface and materials. If a combustible material is present, the griddle will be covered with a sheet metal with at least a 28 gauge thickness. The program will go into effect Sept. 30.
RVIA’s Heating Technical Subcommittee reviewed issues around exterior griddle installation instructions in October 2022. A task force was created to resolve griddle installation issues, which culminated in the new clearance requirement.
The RVIA RV Handbook, section 5.4.7, will be revised to reflect the new requirement. A code change will be drafted and submitted for the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1192 Standard on Recreational Vehicles’ 2029 edition.
