Results for RVIA’s December 2022 survey of manufacturers determined the total shipments for 2022 ended with 493,268 shipments, the third-best year on record.
The finish came despite the industry totaling December 2022 wholesale shipments of 19,907, a decrease of 50.7% compared with December 2021 shipments.
The 19,907 monthly wholesale shipments is the lowest non-pandemic-influenced monthly total since at least 2016. Only April 2020’s 7,197 wholesale RV shipments were lower. RVIA monthly shipment totals are readily available only since January 2017.
“Coming off of the all-time high in 2021, the RV industry continued to post strong shipments through the first half of 2022,” RVIA President and CEO Craig Kirby said. “As expected, we saw shipment numbers normalize off of those record highs in the second half of the year as the industry returned to production numbers seen pre-Covid.”
Total RV shipments for 2022 decreased 17.8% from the all-time record of 600,240 set in 2021. Towable RVs, led by conventional travel trailers, ended 2022 down 20.1% compared with 2021’s 434,858 wholesale shipments. Motorhomes finished the year up 3.9% compared with 2021 with 58,410 units.
“With so many younger and more diverse buyers flocking to RV travel in the past few years,” Kirby said, “the long-term future of the RV industry remains bright.”
December 2022’s towable RV shipments, led by conventional travel trailers, ended the month down 54.6% compared with December 2021 with 16,771 shipments.
Motorhomes finished December down 8.8% compared with December 2021 with 3,136 units.
