Storyteller Overland and Taxa Outdoors have unified as Storyteller acquired the lightweight and overlanding utility trailer manufacturer.
Both companies were owned by private-equity firm L Catterton. L Catterton bought Taxa Outdoors in March 2022 and acquired Storyteller Overland in March 2024.
The acquisition will boost Storyteller’s product range to include lightweight, overlanding products. The manufacturer makes Type B motorhomes under the Storyteller Overland Mode brand and adventure trucks under the GXV Hilt brand.
According to Storyteller, the Taxa acquisition will “empower new generations of underserved and underrepresented customers to elevate their experiences and pursue their passions in the outdoors.”
Along with the acquisition, Storyteller Overland appointed Neil Grimmer as Taxa CEO. Grimmer launched Plum Organics, an infant food company, and has led several brands including Harley Davidson’s global brand.
Grimmer will also serve as Storyteller Overland’s chief strategy officer. He will be responsible for shaping the company’s long-term strategy.
“With the support of Storyteller, Taxa Outdoors customers and dealers can expect full and uninterrupted support for existing products,” Grimmer said, “as well as the introduction of exciting new offerings that leverage the combined expertise of all companies in the Storyteller galaxy of brands.”
The acquisition will combine Storyteller’s 23-state dealer sales and service network with Taxa’s innovations and 20-state dealer network.
Storyteller Overland CEO Jeffrey Hunter said, “This acquisition represents a natural alignment of the vision, values and vibes that support those passions. For us, all of this is yet another giant leap forward to help more people live free, explore endlessly and tell better stories.”
The acquisition and Grimmer’s appointment is the end of Taxa founder and CEO Garrett Finney’s service. Finney founded the company in 2009 and remained as CEO after the sale to L Catterton in 2022.
In a message on his LinkedIn page, Finney said he was excited for the chance to explore new opportunities.
“I got the chance to have a sabbatical and have leapt at it,” he said. “After 14 of Taxa, I get to address the irony of starting an outdoor company (working as opposed to camping) and have some long-planned adventures. I am going to camp, of course, but also sail across an ocean, write, lecture, think. Thank you, Taxa, for everyone and everything. I am leaving now to recharge but I will be there in spirit and in contact!”
The acquisition was financially supported by L Catterton, RX3 and Wheelhouse.
