Go RVing’s 2025 Demographic Study placed RV owners in seven segments, mirroring the segmentation from the first study conducted four years ago.
For the second time, the study found the largest segment of current RV owners to be Casual Campers. Casual Campers comprise 31% of total RV owners.
The study said these RV owners use their RVs for a few weekends a year in the warmer months.
“While a large and satisfied group in total,” the study reported, “their low usage and interest in other travel options makes them least committed to the lifestyle.”
Casual Campers are older than the other six segments, with 81% of them age 55 or older. Nearly half (48%) are retired and only 20% are members of Growth Audiences (defined as consumers identifying as African American, Hispanic, Asian American and/or LGBTQIA+).
This segment uses their RVs a median of 20 days annually. Four-fifths of owners enjoy camping, with majorities citing cooking (52%) and sightseeing (51%) as top hobbies.
Casual Campers’ choice of RV overwhelmingly is a conventional travel trailer (70%), followed by fifth wheels (11%) and Type C motorhomes (6%).
Although Casual Campers enjoy RVing, with 84% saying their family loves RVing, only 51% plan to buy another RV. The half who will buy another RV will likely buy in three to five years (40%) or one to two years (33%).
The study found many who said they did not intend to buy another RV expect the RV they currently own will be their last RV.
Half of Casual Campers said they do not bring gear or transportation with them, the most of any RV owner segment. Casual Campers said they enjoyed hiking, fishing and visiting local attractions. Almost all of them (91%) said they travel with their RV to different locations, rather than setting down at one park or campsite for their trip.
Many (86%) travel with their spouse while a third of Casual Campers travel with pets.
