A Jackie Walorski Memorial Scholarship and a Jackie Walorski Memorial Ministry Scholarship have been established to honor the life and work of the late congresswoman from northern Indiana.
Walorski’s family, including her husband Dean Swihart and her mother Martha, established the memorial scholarships for high school students who are residents of Indiana’s 2nd Congressional District. The scholarships will be given to those pursuing four-year degrees as full-time college students.
The Memorial Scholarship will be given to students in programs related to public affairs, politics or journalism.
The Memorial Ministry Scholarship will be given to those in ministry- or mission-related fields.
Walorski died in a car accident Aug. 3, 2022, at the age of 58. At the time of her death, Walorski was representing Indiana’s 2nd Congressional District.
She was a lifelong resident of the South Bend-Elkhart area. She served as state representative from 2005 to 2010 and was elected to Congress in 2012.
Walorski worked in media and development in northern Indiana after graduating from college. She married Swihart in 1995. The two did mission charity work together in the U.S. and in Romania.
Walorski viewed her position in Congress as an opportunity to serve God and people, her family said.
The first scholarships will be offered in the 2024-25 school year.
